The widening, straightening, and modification works on the Tula River channel, carried out by the National Water Commission (Conagua) since 2017 and accelerated after the September 2021 floods, continue to generate questions among environmental organizations and residents of the Mezquital Valley. They maintain that far from representing a process of ecological restoration, these works have resulted in the systematic and gradual destruction of the ecosystem.
Activists believe that while the federal government, under Claudia Sheinbaum, maintains a narrative based on false data to justify the millions of dollars spent on works to provide “water security” to Tula and the municipalities geographically located downstream from the Endhó Dam, the true purpose of the works is quite different. They argue that the sole aim is to “save” the Valley of Mexico from flooding at the expense of the municipalities in Hidalgo.
