On average, eight vehicles were stolen every day in Hidalgo during the first half of the year. Between January and June, 1,473 investigations were opened for this crime, according to figures from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), making vehicle theft one of the most impactful property crimes in the state.
Of the total number of vehicles stolen, 852 were cars and 621 were motorcycles. Furthermore, 1,115 thefts occurred without violence, while 358 were committed with the use of force or threats, meaning that most cases happen when vehicles are parked or unattended.
Although the incidence decreased compared to the same period in 2015, when 1,688 thefts were reported, experts warn that the crime continues to primarily affect urban and metropolitan areas, where there is a higher concentration of vehicles and greater mobility.
In the Pachuca metropolitan area, authorities have repeatedly reinforced surveillance using C5i cameras and operations in neighborhoods of Pachuca and Mineral de la Reforma, following several cases of car and motorcycle theft. Just at the end of June, an operation led to the arrest of three people allegedly involved in motorcycle theft, after tracking them through video surveillance between El Saucillo, in Mineral de la Reforma, and the Adolfo López Mateos neighborhood in Pachuca.
