Hidalgo Could Have 12 Political Parties Competing in the Next Elections

Although challenges and ratifications by the electoral courts are still pending, the recent approval of new political organizations at the national level means that Hidalgo could have 12 political parties participating in next year’s elections to renew federal deputies, local legislators, and the 84 municipal governments.

The General Council of the National Electoral Institute (INE) approved the registration requests submitted by the citizen organizations that completed the process to become national political parties after meeting all minimum membership, legal, and administrative requirements:

  • Construyendo Sociedad de Paz, A.C. (to be known as PAZ).
  • Personas Sumando, A.C. (to be known as Somos México).

It is worth noting that the INE did not approve the registration of three other organizations due to various irregularities that were detected:

  • México Tiene Vida, A.C.
  • Interacción y Empatía para Todos, A.C.
  • Que Siga la Democracia

As a result, these organizations may appeal to the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary (TEPJF) to defend their registration processes. Therefore, the number of national political parties could still increase or decrease.

National Political Parties Eligible to Nominate Candidates in Hidalgo

Councilor Alfredo Alcalá Montaño recalled that, beginning on July 1, eight national political parties will be eligible to nominate candidates in Hidalgo:

  • National Action Party (PAN)
  • Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI)
  • Labor Party (PT)
  • Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM)
  • Citizens’ Movement (MC)
  • Morena
  • PAZ (Newly registered)
  • Somos México (Newly registered)

Local Political Parties

In addition, four locally registered parties will also participate:

  • Nueva Alianza Hidalgo (PNAH)
  • Democratic Revolution Party of Hidalgo (PRDH)
  • Encuentro Solidario Hidalgo (PESH)
  • Espacio Hidalgo (PEH)

This would bring the total to 12 political party options on Hidalgo’s ballots.

Background

Councilor Alcalá emphasized that the 1977 political reform, through the Federal Law on Political Organizations and Electoral Processes, opened the door for new political forces to seek formal registration and compete within Mexico’s party system.

“Since then, and through June 2026, 30 national political parties have obtained registration. Of those, 22 have lost it for failing to reach the minimum vote threshold established by law, or due to mergers or dissolution. This demonstrates that, rather than being static, the system is continually renewed based on citizens’ support,” Alcalá Montaño concluded.
