After Guatemalan carriers denounced obstacles at the Mexico-Guatemala border ports by Mexican authorities that stop the entry of 36 tourist buses every week, the Customs Administration promised to manage a procedure to resume the entry of tourists from the neighboring country.

The tourism businessman, Jorge Alfredo Gálvez Sánchez, announced that, after the high-level meeting with tourism, security, and prosecutorial authorities, the first steps have been taken to expedite the entry of Guatemalans to Tapachula through Customs.

He said that there is a commitment from the administrator of Ciudad Hidalgo Customs so that within a period of no more than 20 days, the procedures can be resolved, that is, before the Tapachula International Fair begins.

He recalled that since December 2023, the head of the Ministry of Communications and Transportation imposed a special permit for Guatemalans, whose situation has left an economic loss of more than 180 million pesos per week.

“Finally, we were listened to and the first steps were taken for the possible solution of the entry of Guatemalans who bring tourist transportation. The authorities found that there is no federal order for the special permit, but that it is a local issue,” he added.

Gálvez Sánchez accused the head of the office of the Secretariat of Industry and Commerce (SIC) in Tapachula of acting on a personal whim, which has affected the city’s economy by millions of pesos.

“It is a personal whim of the person in charge of the SIC office, who does not have the social or commercial bases to carry out this, so we hope that the problem will be solved and our Guatemalan brothers can be allowed to enter again,” he said.
