Compatriots who traveled to Canada to work in that country with the purpose of providing a better quality of life for their families are beginning to return to their places of origin in the Mezquital Valley. They take advantage of the exchange rate between both currencies since the Canadian dollar is equivalent to 14.51 Mexican pesos.

Migrants benefit from what the country offers since tourist visas allow a six-month legal stay, a situation that is taken advantage of by Mexican workers to work in different activities such as road construction, in the real estate industry, restaurant industry, gardening, among others.

However, with the imminent arrival of winter in Canada, a time when snow covers a large part of the country’s territory, and the cold does not allow outdoor activities, migrants return with their families to spend the Day of the Dead holidays.

Emanuel Martín is one of them, originally from Ixmiquilpan and who arrived on a plane to Mexico from Canada, after a period of work in the city of Alberta.

“When the cold and snow arrive, you can no longer work, or it is no longer convenient because they pay you little, and the time of the Visa expires, so we return to Mexico, to return next year,” he said.

It is worth mentioning that according to information from the Government of Mexico, in the second quarter of 2024 – which includes the months of April, May and June – Mexico received 300 million dollars in remittances from that country.
