On December 1, the Ministry of Tourism of the Government of Mexico granted the designation of Magic Towns to 11 new destinations . Among them is Tonatico, State of Mexico , which becomes the number of ten in the state to have the distinction.
Tonatico is a municipality in the south of the State of Mexico, bordered to the north by Ixtapan de la Sal and to the south by the state of Guerrero . Its name comes from the Nahuatl “Tonatiuh-co”, which means “Place of the sun”.
Tonatico tourist attractions:
One of the most visited tourist spots is the Star Caves , which are located just 12 kilometers from the municipal seat. This place is ideal for those who want to practice extreme sports such as rappelling, or to venture out to swim in the underground rivers. There is also the option of simply gazing at the rock formations that are thousands of years old.
Tonatico hot springs
Among its main attractions, Tonatico is famous for its hot springs, with various spas such as the Municipal Spa of Tonatico, or Salto de Zumpantitlán, where you can admire waterfalls and hanging bridges.
A miraculous place
Tonatico also has its own festivals, among which the celebration of Our Lady of Tonatico stands out , which takes place between the last week of January and the first of February of each year. It should be noted that on that date a large number of pilgrimages arrive to the town, since the Virgin of Tonatico has a reputation for being miraculous. The festival is covered by fireworks, jaripeos, dances and trade in crafts and typical gastronomy.
The temple of Our Lady of Tonatico has great splendor, dates from the 18th century and was built by order of the Franciscan friars. It is said that this virgin was brought by the monks in the year 1553 . Inside, the neoclassical decoration and paintings make it one of the most beautiful churches in the State of Mexico .
