In an unprecedented event, the Secretary-General of UN Tourism, Shaikha Alnuwais, visited the state of Hidalgo this Thursday and toured the historic center of Omitlán de Juárez, a municipality that received the Best Tourism Villages designation in 2023.
Later, together with the local Secretary of Tourism, Elizabeth Quintanar, and the head of the Unit for Innovation, Sustainability, and Professionalization of Tourism at the federal Tourism Secretariat, Miguel Aguiñiga, she visited the community of Tres Cañadas, where she witnessed the Danza del Maíz, a ritual that symbolizes respect for the land, abundance, and collective work.
“This diplomatic visit represents an opportunity to show the world the work that Hidalgo has developed in tourism alongside its communities,” the official said.
During the tour, Shaikha Alnuwais interacted with tourism service providers as well as traditional cooks.
