Members of the National Migration Institute (INM) representative office in Hidalgo detained 464 undocumented migrants between January and June of this year in 24 municipalities across the state.
Pachuca de Soto, the state capital, recorded the highest number of undocumented migrants detained, with 127, followed by Tizayuca with 124, Huichapan with 51, and Atitalaquia with 41. The migrants most detained are from Uruguay, Cuba, Venezuela, and Colombia.
The Migration Policy Unit of the Ministry of the Interior reported that 204 people were detained while passing through Hidalgo in January, the highest number in the last six months. In February, 82 were detained, 46 in March, 33 in April, 52 in May, and 47 in June.
Of the 464 people detained, eight are from El Salvador, 11 from Guatemala, 58 from Honduras, seven from Nicaragua, 98 from Cuba, one from the Dominican Republic, one from Haiti, one from Bolivia, 59 from Colombia, eight from Ecuador, four from Peru, 131 from Uruguay, one from Italy, one from Palestine, one from Senegal, one from Costa Rica, one from Grenada, eight from Chile, and 64 from Venezuela.

Over the past five years, the number of undocumented migrants detained by National Migration Institute officers as they passed through the state of Hidalgo in an attempt to reach Mexico’s northern border has increased.
In 2020, only 378 undocumented immigrants were detained. In 2021, 1,517 were detained. In 2022, the number increased to 1,729. In 2023, it rose to 1,049. In 2024, the number of detainees doubled to 2,473. In these five years, 7,146 people were detained and returned to their countries of origin.
Migrants detained nationwide
Between January and June of this year, officers from the National Migration Institute detained 119,183 undocumented immigrants in the country’s 32 states seeking to reach Mexico’s northern border with the United States. The state with the highest number of detentions was Tabasco, with 71,430 people, followed by Chiapas, with 26,584. Nayarit recorded the lowest number of detentions, with six.
