The principals of all levels of public and private schools in Hidalgo are empowered to suspend in-person school activities in areas that pose a high risk to heavy rains, exercising their management autonomy and institutional co-responsibility, the state’s Secretariat of Public Education (SEPH) reported.
Where appropriate, academic activities will be conducted remotely, using available platforms and resources, to ensure the continuity of the educational process to the extent possible.
This is to safeguard the safety of students at all levels and modalities of education in public and private schools in the state.
Such provisions must be communicated in a timely manner and in ongoing coordination between school authorities and the corresponding educational levels, through the Undersecretariat of Basic Education, the Undersecretariat of Upper Secondary and Higher Education, as well as with parents and guardians.
The state agency called on the educational community to take extreme precautions given the current weather conditions and to stay informed through official channels of this Secretariat and the Hidalgo government.
The SEPH, through the State Registry for the Prevention, Response, and Eradication of School Violence, is providing the telephone number 800-462-7374 to report any weather-related incidents in schools.
Previous Rains
The rains that occurred in late May caused damage to a kindergarten in San Juan Tilcuautla, as well as to two elementary schools in Pachuca and Mineral del Monte. In the latter municipality, at Magattzi Secondary School, water entered classrooms and collapsed walls, prompting the school to suspend classes to disinfect the infrastructure and subsequently resume activities.
Recently, due to the impact of Hurricane Erick on the coast of Oaxaca on June 19, state authorities predicted rainfall of between 75 and 150 millimeters and the risk of landslides in 32 municipalities in the state, primarily in the Huasteca, Sierra, and Sierra Otomí-Tepehua regions.
