Breweries did not buy 15 thousand tons of barley from Hidalgo

Barley producers in Hidalgo were left unsold approximately 15 thousand tons of grain, which, together with the national production that was not acquired by the beer industry, amounts to around 23 thousand tons, so local producers store in their warehouses just over 65% of the grain that was not purchased by the beer companies.

Ricardo Canales del Razo, national president of the Barley Product System, also reported that, although the transnationals Modelo and Heineken did buy the volumes agreed for 2024, which ranged between 40 and 50 thousand tons per company, they did not acquire the rest of the production that was one of the premises for them to settle in Hidalgo.

He pointed out that this phenomenon severely impacts the economy of farmers since it is not profitable to market it as fodder, which would be the second use that could be given to this type of grain, in addition to the fact that its life period could range from three months to a year, depending on the care in storage.

It is not convenient for both of us, we do not compete with corn or sorghum. We could not sell barley at a loss for the four pesos that ranchers pay for other grains, and for them it is not so convenient either because it does not have the same degree of nutrients that corn or sorghum provide.

He explained that, unfortunately, Hidalgo is limited in crop diversity since due to the weather conditions and the level of humidity it is not possible to move to the planting of other grains such as wheat or corn, since, by planting them, their life cycle could not be reached until harvest, which would imply greater losses.

Frosts eliminate pests in crops

In this sense, he pointed out that although barley is planted in May, the drop in temperature and frosts in this period represent an important biological control measure since they eliminate various pests such as the army worm and the friar worm.

They seek to establish cost per ton in February
Likewise, he pointed out that they seek an approach with the president of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum, with two objectives, to provide them with support to market their surpluses and also to establish the first dialogue table of her administration with the breweries so that it is in February of this year that the cost per ton of barley is agreed based on a methodology that considers production costs, yield, equilibrium cost and an arithmetic that includes a percentage of profit.

Finally, he recalled that the last meeting after which the price at which barley was purchased last year was agreed upon took place in the city of Grajales, Puebla, after what he considered a tense marketing process.
