Tula Archaeological Zone: restoration work not progressing due to lack of permission

Although the INAH has already authorized the Hidalgo government to carry out restoration work and install cameras in the Tula Archaeological Zone, progress has not been made because a permit is needed from Profepa, which has not yet been granted, said Miguel Ángel Tello Vargas, head of the Planning and Prospective Unit.

During a work tour of the Tula region, Tello Vargas recalled that in 2023 the Tula Archaeological Zone (ZAT) had intervention by the federation and the state. In addition, the Jorge R. Acosta site museum was reopened, which had remained closed for five years.

On this subject, the head of Planning explained that the governor, Julio Menchaca, signed a framework agreement with the director of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), Diego Prieto, and then two agreements were made in which it was agreed that the Hidalgo government could invest in the improvement and care of the ZAT and Huapalcalco.

The problem is that within the grounds of the Tula Archaeological Zone there is also a Protected Natural Area and a permit must be granted by the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) in order to make the investment in the Toltec zone a reality, said the state official.
