An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 occurred early morning on Saturday 26 December 2020 at 4:15 am local time near La Estacion, Acapulco de Juarez, Guerrero, Mexico, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 5 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface.
The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In La Estacion (pop. 1,400) located 8 km from the epicenter, Cerro de Piedra (pop. 1,500) 11 km away, San Antonio (pop. 920) 12 km away, Bella Vista Papagayo (pop. 570) 13 km away, El Bejuco (pop. 2,300) 14 km away, San Pedro las Playas (pop. 4,300) 14 km away, 10 de Abril (pop. 1,100) 15 km away, and Tres Palos (pop. 5,000) 17 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Acapulco de Juarez (pop. 673,500) located 29 km from the epicenter.
